New Humpback Calf Sighted

Whale Watch Western Australia

New Humpback calf sighted today as the tiny bub surfaced alongside mum in Flinders Bay while a nearby yearling launched into some powerful head lunges and breaching. It was a special surprise this morning as we approached one pod, a secondary pod just ahead of them made a sudden movement as a tiny shape launched into a big head lunge. It was a brand new Humpback Whale calf who must have recently had a feed as the excited bub launched into a couple more head lunges before a cheeky attempt at a tail slap ended with a big splash. It was great to see mum looking so relaxed as she moved calmly through the bay with her little one. It is a long way south for these calves to be born but with their mums protective care and plenty of nutrient rich milk these young calves will have what they need to start growing. The little one was in good spirits today and keeping up with mum easily, we hoped that they would enjoy the rest of their time in these sheltered waters before its time to continue northbound to warmer waters.

Wishing them well we joined our second pod for the morning as a very boisterous yearling Humpback Whale launched into powerful head lunges. White water was flying and then the youngster decided some breaches were in order, landing perfectly each time. It is always wonderful to watch this spectacular Language of the Whales and see how these whales of all age groups use sound to communicate. The little one didn’t encourage the approach of any nearby pods unfortunately, they were all relaxed escort pods. Instead the yearling decided we looked interesting and approached for a much closer look. After meeting the new calf earlier this morning it is amazing to see what a big difference only twelve months can make for the growth of these young Humpback Whales. The population is growing strongly and we always love meeting the next generation, they are the hope of the populations future and a great inspiration for everyone who loves whales. To see these bubs taking on their big blue world is heart warming and we wish this tiny baby the safest of journeys ahead and a wonderful start to a big and adventurous life.
