Orca net it was today as three family pods covered an immense amount of ground as over thirty nautical mile was travelled and much fun had! It was a beautiful, cosy morning with calm seas and an overcast sky that was set to clear through later in the day. Arriving in The Patch we scanned carefully for signs of life, after all the hunting activities from yesterday we were expecting the family pods involved to be well fed and content today. Matriarchs Queen, Alki and Valeri along with their family pods all surfaced together and were covering an immense amount of ground. As far as the eye could see Orca were surfacing, socialising and travelling as one pod and all this ocean covered had us feeling part of one giant Orca net. It is a fantastic tactic that the Ora will use to multitask as they can keep an eye open for prey and flush out the area they are travelling through.
In and amongst all this travelling was plenty of fun as members from each of these family pods mingled and wrestled together. A few spectacular breaches and tail slaps were observed as they kept the surface language flowing amongst all the pod and continued to cover kilometre after kilometre. The boys were boisterous as they wrestled and chased after each other while the calves revelled in the opportunity to meet and socialise with the other youngsters from each of the families. The speed increased and we found a few of them porpoising fully out of the water as their enthusiasm and exuberance was clear to see with their excitable surfacing’s as they travelled at speed. Calm days can often be travel days for the Bremer Bay Orca and we were very pleased to have the opportunity of travelling with them today for so many wonderful ocean miles.
