Peak whale watching season in Perth can be enjoyed right now as hundreds of Humpback Whales move through the resting grounds each and every day. It was a superb spring morning with a warm easterly sending us out of the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and into the heart of the sighting grounds. Our first mums and calves were resting quietly in the shallows as we moved out into deeper water with a flurry of breaching first attracting our attention. It was fantastic to see on our arrival multiple pods within a few hundred meters and we could tally together 50 Humpback Whales. It is always likely that so many whales in close proximity to each other will result in a conversation and that was exactly what unfolded on this exhilarating morning.
The entire time we were with the whales was a symphony of breaching, pec slapping and tail lobbing as many pods joined in with the conversation. Today we enjoyed the company of a few more bachelor males and a couple of females without calves moving through the resting grounds which had the bachelor males very excited. To watch an adult Humpback with so much energy and enthusiasm this late in the southbound migration after months without food and thousands of kilometres travelled is incredible. It certainly displays their great passion for life and communicating with the other whales around them sharing the same journey. Today it was all about the adults as they communicated amongst each other to find the most suitable mate to join with as the calves watched on and learnt from listening in themselves. Our final pod after a very busy morning was a spectacular mother whale breaching only meters from our bow as she too was on the lookout for her male escort and bodyguard in preparation for departure time southbound.
