Perth Blue Whale Experience was amazing today as the Perth Canyon was teeming with Blue Whale action as they feasted on the abundant krill with eight individuals sighted. A beautiful autumn morning was enjoyed as a peaceful boat harbour began to wake to the lovely conditions and we made our way out to the sighting grounds. Plentiful birdlife was observed with many Albatross, Shearwaters and Storm Petrels gliding with the light breeze across the sea and in search of breakfast. Upon our arrival we were welcomed by one big Blue who was relaxed and re-oxygenating in preparation for the next feeding dive before gracefully lifting that fluke effortlessly high. A magnificent sight and the perfect way to start our day with the Blue Whales!
Centre for Whale Research had discovered a further two individuals making their way towards our location and throughout the day further numbers of Blue Whales began to arrive and we were thrilled to observe eight different individuals. One appeared to be a male who approached a second Blue Whale very closely and continued to follow that whale throughout the day. Our third individual was the most curious and gentle character, deciding to surface from right below us at one point and cruise alongside while breathing in preparation for that next dive. It was simply beautiful to lookout over the calm sea and observe multiple blows both near and far. Working with an endangered species is always special but to see a steady number of Blue Whales throughout the day enjoying their day is something we will always treasure and be grateful for these picture perfect autumn days with the Blue Whales.
