The Perth Canyon Blue Whale Season 2019 began today with much excitement as we departed the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour on a magnificent morning to go and meet our beautiful Blue Whales. Arriving in the Perth Canyon it wasn’t long before the rocketing exhalation of the worlds largest mammal reached skywards and we were in the presence of our beloved Blues, at long last! A year is a very long time to miss one of our favourite pod members and it was exhilarating to once again watch that turquoise glow light up the Indian Ocean. Two enormous Blue Whales surfaced in unison and the largest individual began to swim directly towards us… running in a for a big hug (we missed him too!). Shortly after their sounding dives yet another two Blue Whales surfaced and we were in the heart of the krill cafe as the smorgasbord of protein rich krill was being prepared for consumption below. Working hard this morning the four Blue Whales pushed the krill closer together, creating a more efficient way of feeding rather than trying to hunt dispersed krill. Further blows were sighted on the horizon and we were very excited to record 10-12 individual Blue Whales in the area as we interacted with our four mates. The krill patches began to grow smaller and tighter as the Blues sounding dive trajectory changed and with this came one of the most beautiful sights on the planet… the seven meter wide fluke of a Blue Whale! The graceful, powerful movement of a Blue Whale lifting their fluke clear of the water below is stunning and we were blessed to sight three magnificent tail dives today. A sensational start to our Perth Canyon Blue Whale Season 2019 with every precious moment spent with our beloved Blues a true privilege, our oceans and lives would not be the same without them.
