Perth Humpback Whale Tours are currently departing daily and with the chill of winter slowly dispersing the warmth of spring is just around the corner along with over 45 thousand Humpback Whales! Travelling everyday means that these whales make good ground and on average travel between one hundred to three hundred kilometres per day. As they embark on their epic migration along the coast, these magnificent creatures offer an awe-inspiring spectacle for those lucky enough to witness it. Today our morning tour was spent with two very relaxed escort pods who were calmly travelling towards Rottnest Island. All four whales were mature adults and will have experienced this journey along our coastline over many years as they participate in their annual migration.
It was great to spend some travel time with them as they cruised effortlessly and before were knew it Rottnest Island was only a few hundred meters away. Our midday tour enjoyed the company of a lone yearling on the lookout for a friend and a nearby escort pod of young adults looking for somewhere to rest. It became very interesting in the afternoon as a few pods began to converge with two whales working together as they breached and head lunged towards the others. The pod we had been travelling with moved closer to us as they disguised themselves in our sound footprint and away from the more boisterous pod. Hiding underneath us for a bit they soon became interested as they approached us so very closely and came in for a thorough look at everyone onboard. It was a perfect way to complete a special day out on the water with our magnificent Humpback Whales.
