Sardine Jetty Whale Watch tours are departing daily to witness the epic Humpback Whale migration with hundreds of whales travelling past our coastline everyday. Today we sighted a large arrival of pods into the resting grounds with a few bachelor males from yesterday observed causing some boisterous activity as they continued their search for the females. The majority of the pods observed today were adults and amongst them many were bachelor males which always results in some commotion amongst the Humpback Whales. It may be later in the migration season but it certainly doesn’t slow down the competitive spirit of these boys with a few from yesterdays competition pods having stayed in the area overnight.
Some of the pods maintained a low profile with so many bachelors around, they wanted to rest and were not interested in attracting the attention of the boisterous boys! It was inevitable though that these bachelors would find a few of the females and sure enough, they did. Onboard both our morning and midday tour we could see these males trumpet, tail lob and approach the other pods within their vicinity which kept all the whales near to them busy. It is the last day of September today and as we move forward through October we will start to see fewer of these bachelor males and instead the majority of the mother and calf pods will arrive. Keeping that in mind we are very much enjoying every opportunity left to spend some time with these cheeky bachelor males who bring so much excitement and enthusiasm to the annual migration and we are always in awe of their resilience and fitness to put so much into their journey.
