See Perth Winter Whales from June to August each year in the waters off Fremantle as the northern migration unfolds. A beautiful morning with a cool winters breeze and big blue sky was a lovely way to make our way out to the sightings grounds and on our arrival a few pods were on the move. One particular Humpback Whale was travelling solo and on the lookout for a companion and decided the best way to be noticed was by making some noise! Powerful, full bodied breaching did the trick and it is always spectacular to witness the agility and strength of a Humpback Whale breach. The Language of the Whales often involves surface activity as the noise created through tens of thousands of kilograms crashing down onto the oceans surface can be heard by other whales in the area with their specialised and sensitive hearing abilities.
On the migration path there will be many times a Humpback Whale will be travelling solo, even if surrounded by other pods. Today this Humpback Whale was travelling solo and on a mission to find a mate, but it was tricky as the other pods further away were already travelling in pairs of two as they had already found and joined with suitable companions. Patience is key and eventually a suitable friend will swim past, but for the meantime this whale was calling out to try and get a response from another solo traveller also on the lookout. It is fascinating to witness these conversations take place amongst the pods and see the importance of surface language for the spectacularly acrobatic Humpback Whale. A lovely day out on the water, our team are loving the opportunity to spend time with the Perth Winter Whales and study this important part of the annual northern migration.
