Surging in The Patch today as Kidji and Cheryl along with their pod members raced through the swell showing off their athleticism. It was play to start as the youngsters enjoyed some time hanging out and investigating the GoPro before completing 360 circles around the vessel. It was wonderful to see them so excitable and happy as they made the most of some playtime before it was back into forage mode. The energy increased and we were off as the family launched through the swell and began to surge powerfully to the east. It is always incredible to watch just how powerful and efficient they can be when moving in this way and always a great display to witness wild Orca surging in The Patch.
The family surfed the swell and soon things began to take an interesting turn as three males from Blackberrys family pod appeared and joined with the surge. Moving quickly and covering ground we soon found ourselves back in the heart of the hunting grounds as the families regrouped. Perhaps what they had initially been chasing was still within the area as the pods seemed focused and curious with a few investigative dives. It can take multiple hours for an Orca pod to secure their meal depending on the prey they are targeting and with squid and Beaked Whale being the prime targets at the moment both species are not an easy prey to capture. The families had now started to spread out the Orca next again and we wished them will in hopes that the evening ahead would prove fruitful for them with a big meal for them all to enjoy after all that energy burn in the surge earlier on in their day.
