Things to do in Fremantle

Whale Watch Western Australia

Things to do in Fremantle during October including the fantastic cafe scene, Fremantle Markets, Maritime Museum and of course meeting our marvellous Humpback Whales and their gorgeous new calves! It was a beautiful morning with a glassy sea and no breeze making for picture perfect whale spotting conditions. Firstly we had mum and her calf appear as they were moving efficiently away from a commotion just up ahead as multiple pods started to converge. Seven seperate pods began to approach each other and as whales scattered a couple of the mums began to elegantly pec slap to team their calves our to attract attention your way and it was beautiful to watch. Eventually the mums and calves dispersed which left a couple of bachelor males pursuing a female eagerly through the sighting grounds. Such calm conditions meant we could watch the moments of these pods easily and see the mums and calves further away maintain distance from the approaching competition pod.

A marvellous start to our morning and how wonderful it was to see so many new calves having arrived overnight into the sighting grounds. Our midday tour we enjoyed a restful mum and calf who were enjoying some quiet time away from the other pods. Our second interaction was very much the opposite as we found ourselves with a very active mum and calf who repeatedly breached and pec slapped away the afternoon. It was wonderful to see the mother whale making the most of the opportunity to teach her calf the Language of the Whales and perfect the pec slap which can be difficult for a young calf. The little one initially just wanted to practice breaching as over and over she leapt but eventually mums persistence kicked in as her constant pec slapping encouraged her calf to practice with both not pec slapping. Calf did a wonderful job with the pectoral fin slapping and then celebrated with some wonderful breaching to complete the most wonderful day with the whales.
