Three New Bremer Bay Orca Calves

Whale Watch Western Australia

Three new Bremer Bay Orca calves for Season 2025 have been sighted and they are absolutely adorable. Please meet Aurora Star, Sunny and Bailer who are the newest editions to the Bremer Bay Orca population. The start of every season is always an exciting time to catchup with the Orca family pods and keep a close eye out for any new members. The last week has been a fantastic opportunity to interact with a number of pods we have not seen for a while and during these interactions we very excited to observe three new calves who are approximately three to six months of age. All are healthy, adventurous and very confident reflecting that they have had a wonderful start to life with the care and protection of the family pod. Females will often introduce their new calves to us and bring the little ones over for that initial meeting, a very humbling moment for our family and team to be introduced to the little ones in such a trusting way.

Once the initial introduction is completed then we tend to find the calves confidence in us grows and grows every time we meet them and their family. In a short amount of time they start to break away from the pod and zoom over to us for a quick hello before racing back. Although the distance may only be a dozen or so meters it shows a great confidence and curiosity for the calves to peel away from the family and approach us solo, they certainly are apex predators from a very young age! Aurora Star is already hanging out with us and enjoying solo bow riding, considering we have only met her a few times in the last couple of weeks shows just how confident this youngster is going to be in the years ahead. Sunny is a little older than Star but still showing that same confidence and enthusiasm to explore and learn. Bailer is the newest member and amazed us with our first interaction by carrying a large chunk of the families Beaked Whale meal all by himself. Bailer then repeatedly carried the food towards our bow while showing off to everyone, letting it sink for a quick break before swimming downwards to retrieve it gracefully. A wonderful reflection of the ongoing health of the Bremer Bay Orca, we cannot wait for the years ahead of watching Aurora Star, Sandy and Bailer grow into elite apex predators.
