WA Day whale watching this long weekend, we experienced an incredible day of whale watching as Humpback Whales arrived in impressive numbers, offering us numerous close encounters and fascinating surface behaviours. It was a splendid day to connect with these magnificent creatures, and shortly after leaving the harbour, we spotted multiple pods traversing Flinders Bay. On both of our tours today, we were delighted to have the company of lively juveniles who approached the Steep Point to get a closer look at everyone on board. Their excited exhalations, often referred to as trumpeting, filled the air, making it clear just how thrilled these young whales were to explore and satisfy their curiosity.
Over forty Humpback Whales were spotted this morning, with similar numbers during the afternoon tour. The migration is gaining momentum, with new whales arriving in the bay every hour. We also witnessed the first large adults, whose size difference was immediately evident. The big males moved through the sighting grounds with intention, boosting the excitement as multiple pods engaged in breaching, tail lobs, and fluke slaps during the afternoon. The days ahead will see a shift in the age group of whales moving through the bay as larger adults will start to arrive consistently and with that the competitive flare of bachelor males and the energy it brings will be noticeable within Flinders Bay. It was a beautiful long weekend of whale watching and celebrating WA Day, we live in a most beautiful part of the world we are fortunate to call home.
