Western Australia Whale spotting is much fun during September as we can see many bachelor ale Humpback Whales southbound who bring much enthusiasm and energy to the locations they visit. It was a beautiful morning and amongst the still conditions an escort pod had been approached by a rather boisterous bachelor male who was chasing them around every turn they took through the sighting grounds. It was interesting to watch on as the escort male would body block the challenger from getting too close to his female and even she was slightly frustrated with the challenger with a firm tail slap directed his way. He didn’t leave though and eventually the escort pod decide to accept their new companion who was maintaining a consistent distance from the other two which appeared to keep everyone happy for the time being.
Our lone yearling was also still hanging out in the area and came over to say a quick hello and it is great to see this young whale making the most of their time in the safety of the resting grounds. The afternoon was peaceful as escort pods rested and all was well until two bachelor pods converged and created a fuss amongst the other Humpback Whales. Tail lobs, tail slapping and plenty of very loud trumpets broke the peaceful conditions as pods started to scatter with the energy these bachelor boys had ignited in the sighting grounds. A short mingle meet up unfolded as they twisted and rolled together with a very beautiful spy hop enabling one of the males to get a better look around at all the others. A lovely day in Western Australia whale spotting and enjoying the spring weather as days stretch longer and the warmth increases signalling summertime is not all that far away.
