Whale Watch Western Australia enjoyed a wonderful day with the Humpback Whales as competition pods rumbled through the morning and a spectacular breach in the heart of a rainbow made for one of the photographs of the year so far! It was a fun filled morning as multiple pods were on the move and covering ground, it was inevitable that at some point any bachelor males nearby were going to cause drama. The boys did arrive as expected and soon we had two competition pods underway at the same time as they charged after the females with much excitement before using their long pectorals fins to swipe out at the challengers. The morning breeze was creating more drama as it would send the white water around the surging Humpbacks on each surfacing flying through the breeze.
Pivoting, rolling and chasing each other around the Steep Point was such a thrill to witness and we enjoyed the opportunity to be in and amongst the high energy of these pods. The afternoon was a similar high energy but this time it was one Humpback Whale in particular who stole the show. Breaching, inverted tail slapping, peduncle throws and impressive hand stands were observed repeatedly. It was beautiful to watch and also hear the power of this surface language so close to us as this beautiful whale called out to all others who were listening. Nearby other pods responded with breaching and tail lobs of their own as the conversation flowed amongst the pods. A spectacular rainbow stretched out across Flinders Bay and our wonderful Humpback Whale timed a picture perfect breach right in the heart of the rainbow which had us cheering, what an incredibly beautiful sight to witness! Such a special whale and surface language display to observe and it completed yet another memorable day with the incredible Humpback Whales on their current northern migration through Augusta.
