Whale Watching Fremantle today was wonderful with boisterous Humpback calves and competitive bachelor males keeping us busy in the sighting grounds. It was a wonderful day with the whales as on both our mooning and midday tour we enjoyed observing a fantastic mic of pod dynamics with resting mums and calves, playful mums and calves and a few competitive adults in the mixx as well. It has been great to see the sighting ground seeing overrun these last few days by all the mums and their bubs arriving in consistent numbers and enjoying their time in the safety and shelter of the resting grounds. After a sleep and for the calves a feed of milk we often see the babies excitable and enthusiastic to practice some of the Language of the Whales the have been learning. Today that included breaching and plenty of tail lobs as they stretched out and tested the boundaries of their surface activity strength as they hone in their acrobatic skillset.
The sighting grounds also had a healthy number of adults moving through today including bachelor males who as usual were causing a fuss as they shuffled about in search of suitable females to approach. One pod in the afternoon was interesting to observe as a mother and her calf were being pursued by a bachelor male and the calf was tail lobbing all the way along the chase. The mother whale was not overly fussed and seemed excited to hear Bottlenose Dolphins just ahead of her as she beelined them and soon all of the Humpback Whales and Bottlenose Dolphins had joined together for a social interaction. The Humpback calf was thrilled to meet his new playmates and lifted his head high above the waters surface with eyes wide open as he tried to track the fast movements of the Dolphins around him as they chased each other. It was beautiful to see and a most wonderful day observing happy Humpbacks making the most of their time in the waters just off Fremantle.
