Whale Watching Tours from Perth are currently operating daily and enjoying the wonderful company of our magnificent Humpback Whales including brand new calves! It was a gorgeous day out on the water as the breeze is now warmer and the season feels as though it is settling in for the approach to summer. It was busy this morning as three seperate pods converged and amongst the mix we had two mums and calves, one bolted and she made a break away from the bachelor males who focused in on the second cow/calf pod who had an escort male travelling with them. Over the next thirty minutes a competition ensued as baby kept ahead with mums guidance from all the pushing and shoving. Yet another pod morphed in on the action and this time it was an escort pod with the new female capturing the attention of the bachelors and enabling mum, calf and their escort to escape unnoticed. The competition pod continued on as another two challengers arrived and we still had a total of six competitive whales rumbling through the sighting grounds.
Our midday tour had the same perfect weather as the morning, it has been marvellous basking in the sunshine and enjoying these picture perfect conditions. Our first pod was adorable with a tiny calf twisting and rolling alongside mum and her protective male escort as they meandered over towards Rottnest Island. The energy then increased as four seperate pods merged and soon we were amongst yet another competition pod with tail lobs, inverted tail slapping and pec slapping causing much white water and commotion. No more than three hundred meters away another competitive pod started to form as that female also began to pec slap and encourage the males to compete for her attention as we found ourselves in the centre of the action. Over the coming days and couple of weeks we will see the last of the bachelor males migrating past our coast so each and every competition pod is a fantastic opportunity to see the last of this intense communication and fun we enjoy to observe so much with our whale watching tours from Perth.
