Whales off Perth beach were having a blast today as one in particular was breaching and pec slapping the afternoon away in spectacular fashion. It is an exciting time of the season as we observe many lone adults on the migration path who are on the lookout for a friend. Humpback Whales don’t maintain long term pod structures (other than a mother and her calf) and instead are very flexible with their friendships and travel companions. One problem though is often when travelling solo it is not always easy to locate a suitable companion and that can take some work as we had front row seats to that display this afternoon.
A beautiful Humpback Whale decided it was his time to shine and launched into spectacular full body breaching and followed with elegant pec slapping. It was a beautiful sight to see and witness the incredible power these whales have when it comes to launching themselves so effortlessly above the oceans surface. The communication continued for a long time as this Humpback Whale was determined to let all the other whales in his vicinity know his location. A couple of other pods were nearby but they were hesitant to respond our approach this very enthusiastic Humpback Whale and instead kept to themselves. Although it wasn’t the response this whale was looking for he has communicated to all around his intentions and hopefully soon a suitable friend will make their way into the resting grounds and form a friendship with this very enthusiastic and beautiful Humpback we had the opportunity to meet today.
